The proposed revamp of Stockport station is a key example of how infrastructure is helping to underpin the borough's long-term growth ambitions.
Alongside the imminent arrival of Metrolink to Stockport, and building on the success of the Stockport Mayoral Development Corporation's (MDC) regeneration programme, which has already delivered more than 1,200 new homes and is driving plans for a further 8,000 homes by 2040, the station would enhance connectivity, unlock future development opportunities and support the delivery of new homes, jobs and commercial space across the town centre.
Alongside landmark projects such as Stockport Interchange, it represents the next phase of the MDC's vision to create a thriving, well-connected town centre that continues to attract investment, support economic growth and strengthen Stockport's position as one of the UK's most ambitious places to live, work and do business.
The project represents a major investment in Stockport’s future and aims to create a station that is easier to access, better connected and more welcoming for rail passengers, pedestrians, cyclists and the wider community.
Improvements include new station buildings on both sides of the railway, linked by a new footbridge between the town centre and Edgeley. The new buildings and bridge access points would include lifts and stairs to help improve accessibility and make the station easier to use.
Emerging ideas also include safer and more direct walking and cycling routes, improved public spaces and better connections with bus services and the wider Bee Network.
The redevelopment would strengthen east-west connections across the railway, improve routes through and around the station, and support Stockport’s continued growth and regeneration.
We are now sharing early ideas for the station redevelopment and inviting feedback from local residents, businesses, station users and stakeholders. This consultation will help us understand how people experience the station and surrounding area today and what matters most to them. This feedback will help inform the next stage of design development.
